Young carers

Young brother and sister

You may be looking after, or helping to look after someone else in your family who has a long term illness or disability.

These are some of the things you may do:

  • cook, clean, wash or shop
  • help wash or dress the person the person who needs care or
  • organising the home.
  • give lots of emotional support to the person who needs care.

These are some of the issues you may have to face:

  • pressures of school life
  • difficult to talk to friends
  • worries and concerns about yourself and your home life

Where can I find help and support in my area?

Carers' centres - can help with:

  • information and advice
  • help to get support at school
  • opportunities to meet other Young Carers
  • someone to talk to, in confidence
  • time out from caring
